The Best Time To Visit Tanzania Year Round

  • 21/05/2024
  • Tanzania

Knowing the best time to visit Tanzania greatly depends on where you want to go and what you want to see. Whether you’re planning a safari, a trek up Mount Kilimanjaro, or a relaxing beach holiday on Zanzibar, knowing which season to pick is step one when planning your adventure.

Best Time To Visit – The Dry Season

The best time to visit Tanzania for a safari is during the dry season, from late June to October. This period is ideal for witnessing the country’s most famous spectacle: the Great Wildebeest Migration in Serengeti National Park. During these months, vast herds of wildebeest and zebra traverse the Mara River, creating a dramatic and chaotic scene as they attempt to evade the predators lying in wait, including crocodiles and big cats.

The dry season offers clear skies, pleasant weather, and optimal conditions for game viewing. The scarcity of water forces animals to gather around waterholes and rivers, making it easier for safari-goers to spot wildlife. It’s worth noting that this is understandably the most popular time to visit, crowds will be larger and travel costs higher.

At Safari & Beach, we provide exceptional Great Migration package holidays, combining thrilling safaris with a simplified travel booking process.

When To Avoid – The Rainy Season

Tanzania has two unique periods of annual rainfall. The first period, known as the ‘long rains,’ occurs in April and May. Here the region experiences intense tropical downpours, often concentrated in the afternoons. These heavy rains can significantly impact your travel plans, leading to the closure of many safari camps. As a result, this season is usually not recommended, especially for first time visitors.

The ‘short rains’ take place from November to December. This period is characterised by occasional brief showers, which are typically less intense and less frequent than the long rains. These short bursts of rain generally cause minimal disruption, allowing most travel itineraries to proceed as planned. The lighter and more sporadic nature of the short rains makes this a more favourable time for visitors.

Best Time To Visit Tanzania Monthly Breakdown

Here is our detalied monthly breakdown guide to Tanzania’s climate, and the best activities to enjoy during each period.

January – February: The Calving Season

Best for: Wildlife enthusiasts, bird watchers

January to February is the calving season in the Serengeti. This period is the best time to visit Tanzania to witness the birth of thousands of wildebeest calves, which attracts predators like lions, cheetahs, and hyenas, offering spectacular wildlife viewing opportunities. The weather is warm and relatively dry, making it an excellent time for safaris. Bird watchers will be delighted, as this season brings a diverse array of vibrant migratory species to the region.

April – May: The Long Rains

Best for: Budget travellers, fewer crowds

April and May mark the long rainy season in Tanzania. While the heavy rains can make some roads difficult to navigate, this period offers lush, green landscapes and fewer tourists. Prices for accommodation and tours are generally lower, making it an ideal time for budget-conscious travellers. This is also a good time to explore the less-visited southern and western parks like Selous and Ruaha.

June – July: The Dry Season Begins

Best for: Comfortable weather, clear skies

June and July herald the start of the dry season and cooler temperatures. This is one of the best times to go visit Tanzania for a safari, as wildlife congregates around water sources, making animals easier to spot. The weather is comfortable with clear skies, perfect for photography and outdoor activities. This is also the beginning of the Great Migration as wildebeests start moving north towards the Mara River.

August – September: Peak Safari Season

Best for: The Great Migration, game viewing

August and September are peak months for witnessing the Great Migration in the northern Serengeti. During this time, vast herds of wildebeest and zebras cross the Mara River, a dramatic event that attracts numerous predators. These months are ideal for game viewing, with dry conditions and abundant wildlife. However, be prepared for higher prices and more tourists.

October – November: Short Rains

Best for: Transitional landscapes, fewer tourists

October and November bring the short rains, a period of brief, sporadic showers that rejuvenate the landscape without causing significant disruptions. The parks are less crowded, and the scenery is lush and vibrant. This period is the best time to visit Tanzania for a quieter safari experience and for seeing baby animals. The short rains also mark the end of the migration season as herds move back south.

December: Festive Season

Best for: Beach holidays, festive celebrations

December is a festive month in Tanzania, particularly in Zanzibar, where you can enjoy the white sandy beaches and crystal-clear waters. The weather is warm and inviting, making it perfect for a beach holiday. On the mainland, the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater continue to offer excellent wildlife viewing. December also marks the beginning of the calving season in the southern Serengeti, adding another layer of excitement to your safari.
