Luwi Camp

Luwi Camp is a remote and seasonal bushcamp on the banks of a permanent lagoon near the Luwi River in north South Luangwa. Unlike most other camps in the region it is positioned well away from the permanent water and rich vegetation of the main river.

Luwi Camp is a rustic and traditional bushcamp nestled under huge mahogany trees on the banks of a permanent lagoon with views over the floodplain. The lagoon teams with hippo and crocodile and attracts wildlife from far and wide making the camp area constantly busy with animals.

Accommodation is in four huts that are made of reed and thatch with grass matting that covers the polished mud floors. Each room is set up differently utilising trees and natural vegetation with a small verandah where you can sit out and enjoy the view. Storm lanterns and solar lights provide the light at night as there is no electricity

The design of the rooms is simple whilst also comfortable with a double or twin bed and walk-in mosquito nets. The room furniture is all made from local wood and includes a bedside table, luggage shelf and hanging space. All rooms have an ensuite bathroom with a toilet, shower and washbasin under the stars.

A small thatch provides shade over the bar area but other than this there is no central covered area. Daytime meals are served in the shade of the trees whilst dinner is taken under the stars close to the campfire.

Due to its remote location there are not many roads in the area so activities are centred on walking safaris. Most days involve both morning and afternoon walks from the camp returning for lunch and a siesta during the hottest time of the day. Alternatively walks are arranged that link Luwi Camp to one of it’s sister bushcamps – Nsolo, Kakuli & Mchenja – all owned and managed by Norman Carr Safaris.

A very pleasant and remote bushcamp which is a great option for those looking for an “outdoors” experience. Feedback on the hosting, guiding and game in the area is always good.
