ACCOMMODATION DETAILS

Kakuli Camp is a charming bush camp located on the confluence of the Luwi and Luangwa rivers in north South Luangwa National Park. A wonderful area with a high density of wildlife.

Kakuli Camp is a small bushcamp with a great history that overlooks a wide bend on the Luangwa River. Kakuli is the local dialect word meaning an old buffalo bull which has left the main herd.

The accommodation is made up of five spacious, traditional safari tents under shady thatched roofs, each with an open-air bathroom. All of the tents overlook the river with stunning views up and down this hippo-packed stretch of the Luangwa.

A lovely thatched chitenje acts as the centre of camp. It is on a wooden deck overlooking the grazing lawn that leads down to the two rivers and is a perfect spot in which to relax and watch the river and the wildlife meander by.

This area of the Park is renowned for its superb gameviewing. Safari activities from Kakuli will usually be a mixture of game drives and walking safaris. Guests are able to decide each day if they want to venture out on foot or with the vehicle.

Most evenings it is possible to explore the area after dark. This stretch of the Luangwa is bustling with predators and the best time to see them in action is during those first few hours of darkness. Feedback on the guiding and gameviewing is always excellent.

Kakuli is one of the few Zambian bushcamps to open in February and March. At this time of year the river is high, access to the camp is by boat and activities are either on the river or on foot in the drier, sandy areas that surround camp.

Owned and operated by Norman Carr Safaris the camp combines well with its sister-camp,  Kapani, during the emerald season and Mchenja, Nsolo and Luwi during the dry season.

Read our testimonials

We had an amazing family holiday (2 kids aged 10) and the service and recommendations from S&B were fantastic. Local Masai Wanderings guide (Clement) was brilliant, knowledgeable and friendly and a real joy to travel with. Everything went very smoothly which was a testament to the organisation by S&B. Many thanks to Nick and the team, we will be back!

Feast Family

When you book a holiday like this you know it’s going to be early starts and early nights, and on the go Inbetween. It is the most rewarding experience, and the mix of luxury and tented accommodation makes you appreciate both, the consistent is the level of service from all staff, and their inherent friendliness was an added bonus.

Morag Bennett

I am just back from Tanzania and wanted to thank you very much for a fantastic itinerary. I loved all the accommodation choices made, all the connecting flights worked well and the guide was superb. I had a great time and let me know if you want to get some more feedback on any of the properties suggested by you and also Pongwe Beach which excellent.

Armin

We had the BEST time! I have been struggling to put into words how amazing our honeymoon actually was. By the time we got to Selous Riverside Safari Camp it was after lunch so we’d missed the afternoon trip but we went on the river safari late afternoon which was brilliant, could only be discribed as breathtaking for our first few sightings.
