Chikoko Trails

Chikoko Walking Trails, operated by Remote Africa Safaris, in the South Luangwa National Park are conducted using two season bushcamps in a very beautiful area, rich in wildlife. It is a wilderness area, free of roads and vehicles.

Chikoko Walking Trails operate upstream from their main Tafika Camp on the west bank of the Luangwa River, utilizing two exclusive bush camps named Chikoko Tree Camp and Crocodile River Camp.

Chikoko Tree Camp is situated 8km upstream of Tafika. As the name suggests the 3 twin chalets are raised above the ground, within the tree canopy. This enhances the view of the acacia grove in front of camp where a constant array of wildlife activity unfolds throughout the day.

Crocodile River Camp has 3 chalets imaginatively constructed of thatch and natural materials–delightfully simple, perfectly comfortable. It rests beneath a grove of magnificent ebony trees, overlooking a dambo and the action of a day in the wild.

As no vehicles are permitted in the area of these camps then all luggage and supplies are portaged into the camps. Guests only need to carry their binoculars and cameras and will arrive into camp as part of a walking safari.

The walking trails follow a maze of animal footpaths between camps, accompanied by a Remote Africa Safaris guide, an armed National Park’s scout and the tea bearer bringing up the rear. Walks normally last a leisurely 3-4 hours, with a mid morning break for tea. The terrain is fairly flat but occasionally uneven.

Guests transferring to/from Tafika Camp would normally do so as part of the morning or afternoon walking activity. Direct routes to camp would be used for guests arriving late in the day. It is best to avoid late arrivals into Mfuwe if guests are transferring directly to either of the Chikoko Walking Trails camps.
