Buffalo Ridge Safari Lodge

Buffalo Ridge Safari Lodge is the first wholly-owned Community based safari Lodge to be developed in South Africa. This eco-tourism partnership means substantial benefits accruing back to the community itself.

The lodge is located within the transition region between the lowveld bushveld and the Kalahari thornverld and as a result offers an incredible variety of species living in both eco-systems. In addition, volcanic intrusions which frequent the area, called Inselbergs, provide a spectacular backdrop to the reserve. The lodge is located on the western side of the Madikwe Game Reserve and enjoys traversing rights across the entire area. This makes it ideal for families, honeymoons and a romantic safari experience.

Buffalo Ridge Safari Lodge is built on the Tweedepoort Ridge overlooking the plains and inselbergs of the western sector of the game reserve. It’s built over two tiers of the ridge and accessed via a wooden bridge that crosses a ravine surrounded by rock figs. Breathtaking views from the main public areas of the lounge make for a beautifull setting. The lodge has a reception, dining lounge and swimming pool with breathtaking views across the bush veld below.

The lodge has eight suites, built with rock, wood and thatch, each with it’s own viewing deck and decorated in natural hues of colour and texture, offering a very private and luxurious experience. The thatched suites, with sliding doors from each room and shower allow you to experience a oneness with nature and hear the stunning call of the wild, whether it be the African Fish Eagle or the busier local bird life.

The Madikwe is very popular with families because it offer a consistently good game viewing experience in a malaria free environment.  The 75000 hectare Madikwe Game Reserve lies in the North West Province of South Africa close to the border of Botswana and fringes upon the Kalahari Desert therby merging two distinct environments.

The success of the Madikwe model has prompted and helped similar ventures between the local community, local tourism and private business develop and grow in South Africa.
