Luangwa Safari House is a stunning private house situated in the Nkwali area of central South Luangwa. A superb bush location on the edge of a seasonal lagoon with a backdrop of the Chindeni Hills.
Luangwa Safari House is extraordinary – a wonderful original design offering the luxury and intimacy of a private house in a very special bush environment.
The entrance of the house is grand, castlesque and is exquisitely faced with local stone. The massive pivot door opens into the huge main room and instantly you see incredible views through the front of the house – which is completely open – down to the lagoon.
The sizeable living room is dominated by large comfy sofas and a huge marble dining table. The room stretches up two storeys to the thatched roof whilst two wooden staircases on either side on the front door take you to the upstairs bedrooms. The open front of the living room leads out onto a tiled terrace which is also used as a dining area with large plunge pool to one side.
From this terrace a risen walkway leads to a wooden deck surrounding a small group of huge ebony trees in the middle of the lagoon. There is a large leather sofa, and a hanging chair plus dining table and chairs. This is a very cool place to enjoy lunch with the waterhole only meters away where families of elephant come to bathe throughout the day.
Each of the four bedrooms has a style and colour theme of its own using local textiles. The extra large beds (the most comfortable anywhere in Zambia!), are all individualy designed and fit under one mosquito net. Each ensuite bathroom reflects the design of the bedroom, from copper for the “Coral room” to recycled sandblasted aluminium in the “Blue Agate” bedroom.
The upstairs rooms have a suspended wooden balcony, where you can sit out at night with a moonlit view over the bush to the distant hills. The downstairs bedrooms each have a private tiled verandah with large morris chairs for quiet moments.
When staying at Luangwa Safari House you have your own private guide and vehicle for all game drives (day & night) and walking safaris. This flexibility is great and works really well for private groups or families. Jacob, the guide for the “house” is highly experienced and knowledgable with an infectious personality.
We stayed here in October 2009 and had a great experience – we couldn’t think of a better place to be anywhere in the world at that time. The house is such a great design and comfortable, the environment is stunning and the range of activities really inspiring.

We had an amazing family holiday (2 kids aged 10) and the service and recommendations from S&B were fantastic. Local Masai Wanderings guide (Clement) was brilliant, knowledgeable and friendly and a real joy to travel with. Everything went very smoothly which was a testament to the organisation by S&B. Many thanks to Nick and the team, we will be back!
When you book a holiday like this you know it’s going to be early starts and early nights, and on the go Inbetween. It is the most rewarding experience, and the mix of luxury and tented accommodation makes you appreciate both, the consistent is the level of service from all staff, and their inherent friendliness was an added bonus.
I am just back from Tanzania and wanted to thank you very much for a fantastic itinerary. I loved all the accommodation choices made, all the connecting flights worked well and the guide was superb. I had a great time and let me know if you want to get some more feedback on any of the properties suggested by you and also Pongwe Beach which excellent.
We had the BEST time! I have been struggling to put into words how amazing our honeymoon actually was. By the time we got to Selous Riverside Safari Camp it was after lunch so we’d missed the afternoon trip but we went on the river safari late afternoon which was brilliant, could only be discribed as breathtaking for our first few sightings.
