Matemo Island

Matemo Island sits in the centre of the Quirimbas Archipelago some 100kms north of Pemba.

Matemwe Island is eight kilometres long and three kilometres wide, with pristine beaches enveloped by an azure sea, offset by the distinctive silhouette of thousands of palm trees.

A member of the Rani resort chain which includes Medjumbe Island and Indigo Bay, it is the largest island lodge within the region with 24 palm thatched chalets.

Each of the air-conditioned chalets is situated on the beach within metres of the sea, and has its own en suite bathroom, outside shower and deck hammock for lazing in whilst watching passing dhows and the gentle undulations of the sea.  Every effort has been made to ensure that the beach chalets blend into the natural surroundings, with local Mokuti palm roofs offset by glamorous touches such as local white marble, ornate carved doors from Zanzibar and rich furnishings and rugs from Dubai.

The spacious guest areas are gently elevated above the sea, with the lively bar, dining area and swimming pool commanding sweeping views over the Indian Ocean.  Fresh, seafood-oriented meals are served in a variety of locations, – in the open dining area, by the poolside or on the sand with the sea lapping at your feet.

The tropical waters around Matemo Island are excellent for diving and snorkelling, and the lodge has a full in-house dive operation.  There are plenty of other water sport activities availble, some of which are free of charge.  For further relaxation, a range of simple spa treatments is on offer.
