Sand Rivers

Sand Rivers is a truly wonderful lodge, up there with our favourites in Africa. The stunning location, sublime service and expert guiding combine perfectly.

Accommodation at Sand Rivers is in spacious open-fronted cottages made of stone and thatch, and raised up on the banks of the Rufiji with amazing views out across the river.

There are five standard rooms offering super views and stylish accommodation. The two suites all have one bedroom and oversized decks with dipping pools.

For small groups or complete privacy, Kiba Point is a private safari camp at Sand Rivers with 3 bedrooms, spacious living area with infinity pool and your own private team of staff and guides.

All the rooms and suites at Sand Rivers have an open wall, giving full panoramic views and a real outside in feel.

The lodges main mess and dining area is set close to the river and is a generous space.  It is grand yet cosy, the atmosphere is familiar, and the service is excellent.

The boat trip from the lodge to Stieglers Gorge is stunning and a perfect way to start the day with a picnic breakfast on the banks of the river. Walking safaris are another highlight and the guides will arrange long or short walks to suit you – long walks tend to start in the early morning with shorter walks before sunset.

Fly Camping is a highly recommended part of any extended trip to Sand Rivers. The shared fly camps are set up on a sand bank, or close to one of the lakes, and consist of spacious mosquito-net tents with comfortable safari bedrolls. There is a bucket shower – with hot water – and a short-drop toilet set up just behind camp.

Sand Rivers is a superbly located and luxurious lodge whilst the quality of guiding is some of the very best you will find in Tanzania.
