Rwanda Gorilla Trekking Advice & Tips

  • 20/05/2024
  • Rwanda

The forested mountain ranges of Rwanda offers one of the most majestic wildlife experiences in the world—gorilla trekking. For many travellers, a journey to see these incredible apes in their natural habitat is not only the adventure of a lifetime but an immersive way to connect with one of the planet’s most awe-inspiring creatures. Representing some of the most critically endangered primates on the planet, gorillas have sadly faced a history of habitat destruction and population decline – but thankfully their numbers are now on the rise, and Rwanda has successfully developed a thriving trekking industry focused around conservation and providing these wonderful encounters.

This blog post provides essential advice and tips to help you prepare for your gorilla trekking experience.

Where To Go Gorilla Trekking In Rwanda

Over half of the worlds remaining 1,000 mountain gorillas reside in the Virunga Mountains, a region renowned for its biodiversity and stunning volcanic landscapes. This region stretches approximately 50 miles and spans the borders Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The most popular location for gorilla trekking in Rwanda is Volcanoes National Park. Situatied in the northwest, it is famous for its thriving population of mountain gorillas and offers visitors a unique opportunity to observe these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat.

Choosing the Right Time to Visit

Gorilla trekking in Rwanda can be done year-round, but the best times are during the dry seasons—from mid-December to early February and from June to September. These periods offer easier hiking conditions and far less rainfall. However, these are also the busiest months, so booking your permit in advance is crucial as daily access is limited to protect the gorillas and their natural environment. It is possible to visit outside of these seasons, but do bear in mind that it may be more difficult due to muddy trails and frequent rainfall.

Getting the Necessary Permits

One of the most important steps in planning your gorilla trek is securing a permit. Permits are required and can be quite expensive, but they are essential for conservation efforts. It’s advisable to book your permit through a reputable travel company or directly from the Rwanda Development Board well in advance, as they are limited to only 96 permits per day.

Due to a history of poaching, the gorillas are fiercely protected by rangers, and 10% of the revenue from gorilla trekking permits is used for conservation and development, so your Rwanda gorilla trek plays a direct role in safeguarding these magnificent animals and supporting the local communities.

Planning a gorilla trekking vacation can be challenging, but with Safira and Beach, we provide complete holiday itineraries to make the process easier. Explore our gorilla trekking itineraries.

Physical Preparation

Gorilla trekking is physically demanding. You may be hiking through dense forests and up steep volcanic slopes, sometimes reaching elevations of over 3,000 meters! We’d advise you to engage in some cardio, strength training, or practice hikes in hilly herrain before your trip just to make sure you’re in top shape.

What to Pack For Gorilla Trekking

Packing the right gear can make or break your trekking experience. Some essential items include:

  • Hiking boots: Durable, waterproof, and with good ankle support.
  • Gloves: These can protect your hands from nettles and thorny plants.
  • Light rain jacket: Weather can be unpredictable, and it’s crucial to stay dry.
  • Long pants and long-sleeved shirts: To protect against insects and underbrush.
  • Hat: For sun protection.
  • Trekking Poles: Often provided by guides, but you can bring your own if preferred.
  • High SPF Sunscreen and insect repellent: To protect your skin during the trek.
  • Plenty of water and snacks: Keep hydrated and energized throughout the hike.
  • Binoculars: For better viewing of the gorillas and other wildlife.

Respecting Gorilla Etiquette

When you reach the gorillas, never forget that these are wild animals and always follow the park guidelines. It’s important to maintain a respectful distance (at least 7 meters) to avoid transmitting diseases to them. Speak quietly and avoid sudden movements that could startle the animals. Photography is allowed, but flash photography is prohibited as it can frighten the gorillas.
