Nsefu Camp is superbly located on the banks of the Luangwa River, in the middle of the Nsefu sector of South Luangwa National Park.
Nsefu Camp has been in its present location since 1953, making it Zambia’s oldest safari camp. The camp location is on a stunning sweeping bend in the river with superb views and includes a terraced area where game grazes during the day.
The original rondavel rooms have been refurbished and extended, with new spacious ensuite bathrooms. Inside the rooms are twin beds which are surrounded by walk-in mosquito nets. The furnishings, fittings and fabrics used are in keeping with an “old fashioned” feel and offer an “understated elegance” which works perfectly.
The ensuite bathrooms are partially open to the outside with a seperate shower section and flush toilet whilst in the middle is a sink with antique style taps and a clothes hanging area.
Each room has a clear view of the river, through both the large windows and from the wooden verandahs.
The bar and sitting room, tucked in beside a huge extinct termite mound, overlooks a small lagoon and the sweeping bend in the river. This is just a wonderful place to just sit and relax in the comfortable chairs taking in the view and the wildlife. The furniture maintains the camps “old style” character and charm with wind-up gramaphone, solid silver objets d’art and antique photographs.
The seperate dinning room which is built under thatch at the other end of the camp also has superb views of the river although dinner is often taken outisde sitting under the stars beside the riverbank or elsewhere.
A campfire is also set up on in front of the rooms where breakfast is served at sunrise before everyone heads out on their morning safari activity.
Nsefu Camp offers day and night game drives as well a walking safaris and the quality of the guiding is always high. Each day tends to work around a morning and afternoon activity which last around 4 hours with time in the middle of the day to relax and enjoy the camp environment.
Owned and operated by Robin Pope Safaris the camp combines well with its sister-camps, Nkwali Camp and Tena Tena Camp, or as base before or after an extended walking safari using mobile camps.
We stayed at Nsefu Camp in October 2009 and really appreciated the wonderful location and history of this “old style” camp. The atmosphere is very friendly and relaxed, food and service excellent and all the guests appreciated the superb game viewing. Our favourite of the Robin Pope “permanant” camps although they are all great.

We had the BEST time! I have been struggling to put into words how amazing our honeymoon actually was. By the time we got to Selous Riverside Safari Camp it was after lunch so we’d missed the afternoon trip but we went on the river safari late afternoon which was brilliant, could only be discribed as breathtaking for our first few sightings.
We had an amazing family holiday (2 kids aged 10) and the service and recommendations from S&B were fantastic. Local Masai Wanderings guide (Clement) was brilliant, knowledgeable and friendly and a real joy to travel with. Everything went very smoothly which was a testament to the organisation by S&B. Many thanks to Nick and the team, we will be back!
When you book a holiday like this you know it’s going to be early starts and early nights, and on the go Inbetween. It is the most rewarding experience, and the mix of luxury and tented accommodation makes you appreciate both, the consistent is the level of service from all staff, and their inherent friendliness was an added bonus.
I am just back from Tanzania and wanted to thank you very much for a fantastic itinerary. I loved all the accommodation choices made, all the connecting flights worked well and the guide was superb. I had a great time and let me know if you want to get some more feedback on any of the properties suggested by you and also Pongwe Beach which excellent.
