Flatdogs Camp is located adjacent to the main Mfuwe Bridge which is the main entrance point to the South Luangwa National Park. An excellent lower cost option with a very friendly atmosphere and personal service.

“Flatdogs” is a local nickname for the crocodile and seems totally appropriate for this extensive and imaginative camp built on the banks of the Luangwa River.
The camp was originally set up to service backpackers and overland low budget trips however in recent years the whole place has been revamped to offer high quality chalet rooms and suites on a par with some of the upmarket lodges, at a fraction of the price.
The best accommodation is the “Jackal-Berry” Treehouse which is built around three live African Ebony trees with unspoilt views out across the dambo and lagoon system, favoured by elephant and giraffe. The Treehouse has three main decks which are around six feet high off the ground with wooden decks and stairways to reach the spacious sitting area and open-plan bedrooms. Each bedroom has open air en-suite facilities with hot shower, flush toilet and sink.
The “standard” rooms are housed in chalets with a downstairs double room surrounded by a cool veranda and an upstairs twin room with a high thatched roof and views of the river. Simple and comfortable interiors with electric fans and large mosquito nets surround our beds. Each bedroom has private bathroom facilities either en-suite or down a short flight of stairs.
There is also a “family” House with three bedrooms, sleeping a total of eight. The two downstairs bedrooms are ensuite & there are two further hot showers & toilets for the loft room. There is a viewing deck upstairs overlooking the Luangwa accessed by a spiral staircase from the kitchen area.
For those who enjoy the more sociable aspects of life in the bush, the “Dog and Gat” Bar and Restaurant offers an á la carte menu of excellent food, a great pub, wireless internet café, book swap and a gift shop. Satellite TV is installed for selective viewing of the news, sporting highlights or movies and the swimming pool is there to be dipped into when everything gets too hot!
The riverfront has not been developed in an effort to minimise disturbance to the riparian ecology, but visitors remain free to sit quietly under shady trees along the riverbank and watch the game in the National Park just across the water.
Safari activities are taken within the South Luangwa National Park and can be arranged as a half or full day.
A really excellent lower cost option which can be combined with one of the camps within the park. We have had very good customer feedback particularly in respect of the excellent Jackal-berry treehouse.

We had an amazing family holiday (2 kids aged 10) and the service and recommendations from S&B were fantastic. Local Masai Wanderings guide (Clement) was brilliant, knowledgeable and friendly and a real joy to travel with. Everything went very smoothly which was a testament to the organisation by S&B. Many thanks to Nick and the team, we will be back!
When you book a holiday like this you know it’s going to be early starts and early nights, and on the go Inbetween. It is the most rewarding experience, and the mix of luxury and tented accommodation makes you appreciate both, the consistent is the level of service from all staff, and their inherent friendliness was an added bonus.
I am just back from Tanzania and wanted to thank you very much for a fantastic itinerary. I loved all the accommodation choices made, all the connecting flights worked well and the guide was superb. I had a great time and let me know if you want to get some more feedback on any of the properties suggested by you and also Pongwe Beach which excellent.
We had the BEST time! I have been struggling to put into words how amazing our honeymoon actually was. By the time we got to Selous Riverside Safari Camp it was after lunch so we’d missed the afternoon trip but we went on the river safari late afternoon which was brilliant, could only be discribed as breathtaking for our first few sightings.
